Imagen vs OpenAI vs Grok: choosing an AI image model
The three image families available in GO AI Chat have distinct temperaments rather than a ranking. Imagen is our first stop for clean commercial photorealism. OpenAI handles legible text and multi-part instructions best. Grok is the loosest and most stylistically adventurous, which is a feature when you want a look rather than a product shot. Qualitative, from daily use, as of August 2026.
Three temperaments, not a leaderboard
Image model comparisons age badly because each family ships a step change every few months and the ordering flips. What has been stable, in our experience, is character: which family you reach for depends on the job more than on which released most recently.
| Job | Start with | Because |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial photorealism | Imagen | Clean lighting and materials; least "AI sheen" on product and food |
| Legible text in the image | OpenAI | The long-standing weak spot of the whole category, handled best here |
| A prompt with several constraints | OpenAI | Follows "three objects, this arrangement, that colour" more literally |
| Illustration and stylised work | Grok | Looser, more willing to commit to a look |
| Something a bit strange | Grok | Less averaged-out; produces the surprising option more often |
| Restyling a photo you own | Restyle, not generation | Keeps your composition; the model isn't inventing the subject |
The thing that moves results more than model choice
Prompt structure. Across all three families the same discipline applies, and it outperforms switching models:
- Subject first, in concrete nouns. "A ceramic pour-over coffee dripper," not "coffee stuff."
- Then the shot. Framing, angle, lens character: "three-quarter view, 50mm, shallow depth of field."
- Then the light. This is the single highest-leverage phrase in an image prompt. "Soft window light from the left, late afternoon" changes more than swapping models will.
- Then the style. One style, named. Stacking four adjectives averages them into mush.
If an image is close but wrong in one respect, change only that clause and regenerate. Rewriting the whole prompt tells you nothing about what mattered.
Restyling is the underrated one
Generation invents everything, including the subject you cared about. Restyling starts from your photo and re-renders it — the composition, the pose, the person are already fixed, so the model only decides the look. That's why restyled results feel more "yours" and why they fail less often.
GO AI Chat ships 24 restyle styles (Pixar-ish 3D, Regency, fantasy, anime, and so on) plus a Studio editor for colour grading, light, detail, and effects when you want to finish by hand rather than re-roll.
What all three are still bad at
- Hands and fine manipulation — better than two years ago, still the first place to look when something feels off.
- Exact counts — "five candles" is a suggestion, not an instruction.
- Consistent characters across images — two generations of "the same person" won't match. Restyle one photo repeatedly instead.
- Real logos, real people, real places — expect approximations, and check rights before publishing anything that leans on a real brand.
How we'd actually choose
Ask what would make the image fail. If the answer is "it looks fake," start with Imagen. If it's "the word on the sign is garbled," start with OpenAI. If it's "it's boring," start with Grok. If the subject is something you already photographed, don't generate at all — restyle.

FAQ
Which AI image model is the most realistic?
For clean commercial photorealism we start with Imagen; for photoreal images that also need legible text or precise instruction-following, OpenAI. Neither answer stays true for long.
Which model puts readable text in an image?
The OpenAI family, in our use — it's the area where the gap between families is most visible.
What's the difference between generating and restyling?
Generating invents an image from a description; restyling re-renders a photo you already have, keeping the composition. Restyling fails less often when the subject matters.
Do I need three separate apps?
No — GO AI Chat runs all three families plus 24 restyle styles and a Studio editor in one app.
